2025.10 – Desktop Quick Add, /Move to child, Smart Nodes, Neo Theme, Backspace into Slash Command, main.py no longer parsed as URL

By

July 28, 2025

Hey there Workflowy folks. We have a bunch of exciting updates for you this week. From a quick add command on desktop, to a new dark theme, and a lot more to make your Workflowy experience a little bit nicer! Check out the full change log below and let us know what you think and what you’d like to see next.

  • Quick Add on Desktop Press Win+Alt+N (Windows) or Opt+Cmd+N (Mac) to open a lightweight panel for capturing thoughts from anywhere. Supports Markdown, auto-inserts clipboard text, strips HTML to Markdown, and grabs page titles from links. Notes land in your Inbox.
  • Use the new “/Move To Child” Slash command to quickly move a bullet under another.
  • Pro subscribers with Labs and AI enabled can now use Smart Nodes – a new node type that generates content to help you plan, summarise, draft, and create inside Workflowy. Try it with /ai or from the Turn into… menu.
  • New theme: Neo – When Dark isn’t dark enough.
  • You can now backspace into a slash command if you make a typo while searching for one. For example, typing “/mtv” isn’t recognized as a command and exits slash mode. Press Backspace — you’re back in the game with /mt , and slash mode is reactivated.
  • Fragments like “main.py” (and some other common file extensions) are no longer parsed as URLs unless they include a protocol (e.g. https://main.py). You can now manually unlink any existing “.py” in your outline (automatically doing this on our side would be too risky). Let us know if you come across any other cases where file names get linked unintentionally.

Other

  • In Markdown Export, To-do items are now rendered as - [ ] and - [x]
  • http://www and https://www are added as exceptions and no longer parsed as a valid URL
  • Links inside code snippets are now ignored — for example, example.com will be rendered as plain text instead of a clickable link in all new snippets.
  • Dates added by autocomplete no longer have weird spaces.
  • In addition to pressing Tab, you can now also click the popup that appears when you type “today” to autocomplete the date
  • Children of starred bullets are now draggable in and from the sidebar.
  • The “gear” icon in the date auto-complete pop-up now correctly leads to the Dates section of the settings.

Until the next one!

Please can you add date recognition to the quick add window? This would then work seamlessly with the “found dates” feature in the calendar without the need to go to the inbox and move to the date.

Good morning…just checking to see if anyone knows if it is NOT available on iOS yet, or if I am just having an issue with my phone.

Hi there! Today I noticed that the tag section is looking much more vibrant and attractive! Thanks a lot for such tiny enhancements which play a great role in overall impression from using Workflowy ❤️🙏

Anyone know how to use the shortcut lightning bolt thing?
Enter a shortcut for this node. Use it in any Workflowy search to find this node quickly.”

the win+alt+n shortcut has already been dedicated to onenote by the system.

How do I turn off the global macOS shortcut for “Workflowy Quick Add”? It is intercepting the “New Window” command in Safari. I want the latter and have no use for the former. Right now, my only workaround is to quit the Workflowy Desktop App, which will ironically make WorkFlowy _harder_ to use rather than easier.

Anyone know how to produce Quick Add to Desktop on a Chromebook?

Thank you for these new features!

I have a question: will you finally add the same text size adjustment feature to the desktop application that is available on mobile devices? When I try to increase the text size, all elements are enlarged, not just the text, unlike on mobile devices, and the result is not good at all.

Has anyone else’s layout taken a turn for the worse? Headers are now jumbled up with no space between

Headers with lots of items (I have some very populous one) won’t load everything.

What happened?

How do I activate the Neo theme? I don’t see it in Settings on web or iOS. Thanks!

Workflowy added a GLOBAL shortcut for Quick Add without the ability to change or modify it?! Were we expecting that no one else could have possibly already thought of this shortcut?

I don’t think I have any workaround other than quitting WorkFlowy (one of my previously “always open” apps).

I like the new smart nodes, but don’t like the bottom-right bubble chat button. Would it be possible to disable that and keep the smart nodes feature

Is there a way to disable or change the quick add hotkey? I already use cmd+option+n for another workflow and I’d like to preserve it.

I’ve got this problem too – Cmd + Option + n is a shortcut in After Effects I use all the time and this overrides it. I can’t seem to find a way to disable it the Workflowy settings.

Love the Quick Add feature. It would be great if I could chose in the settings to which bullet these notes are sent to (like with the Siri shortcut, which I use all the time on my iPhone).

I’m also not finding the notes I make on the “Quick Add on Desktop” popup anywhere in my Workflowy once I press save. I’m on the latest MacOS version.

But otherwise I just wanted to pop on here to say thank you for this wave of new updates recently. Very glad to see development is ongoing for software that has become such a big part of my day-to-day.

If I could be so bold as to highlight a feature request down in this space, that I voted for already on the Zendesk forum: password-protecting certain nodes.

Loving the pace of updates and the fresh energy on smaller things!

Please can we have a keyboard shortcut for Mirror To in one of these little update packages? We have Move To, Move Up, Move Down. Mirror To is the odd one out in the basic workflow actions in that it does not have a 1st class keyboard shortcut 🙏🏼

(I am aware of slash command and it’s great, but first class keyboard shortcut is way better for core actions)

How are you able to keep this pace of updates? Each week a new update and each update looks like a month’s worth of work. I love seeing (and supporting) active development without forcing the user to change workflows.

I don’t need many of the new features, for instance the code block stuff, but none of it gets in my way. It still feels like the simple bullet journal I started with years ago but now it has so much more power behind it.
