New Feature: Sort Items Alphabetically

By

February 27, 2025

Hey Workflowy folks, we’re excited to announce a new feature that many of you have been asking for! Starting today, you can sort all items nested under a bullet alphabetically or in reverse alphabetical order with just a click. This feature will help you organize your lists, projects, and notes more efficiently, making it easier to find what you need when you need it.

How to Sort Your Items

Sorting your items in Workflowy is now incredibly simple:

1. Open the menu for the item that contains the list you want to sort.
2. From the bullet menu, choose ‘Sort A-Z‘ or ‘Sort Z-A’.

You can also perform the sort from the slash command.

We’re excited to see how you integrate this new sorting capability into your workflows. Whether you’re a meticulous organizer or someone who needs occasional help bringing order to chaos, we think you’ll find this feature pretty useful.

Let us know what you think about the new sorting feature in the comments below, and as always, we’re here to listen and make Workflowy even better for you.

Until the next one! 🎉

This is super 🙂
I’d never needed it before, but new projects = new lists, so now it’s a really really useful feature 🙂

Thank you 🙂

Is there a special character that I can prefix an item with that will cause it to sort to the end of an A-Z list in Workflowy? AI tells me that ~ should work – an in theory I agree – but in practice it doesn’t!

Option to sort numerically would be nice. I have case numbers that I use and then numbers not letters.

That’s cool. I’ve been thinking these days that sorting would be a very nice feature for Workflowy because otherwise I would need external bookmaklet to sort my stuff. But could you please add this feature to the HOME screen? I haven’t found a way to sort my top level bullets.

This is cool but messes up if you use emojis 🙁

I think these fringe cases like this are why it’s not so easy to “just add a feature to software”. It probably takes so much testing and debugging beyond what we’re aware. Good comment though.

Put your emojis in the ends of the bullets, not in the beginnings

That looks so cluttered, noisy and isn’t as effective as the visual cue being at the beginning of the line

I think the best implementation of this sorting feature would be to ignore emojis. At least I can’t think of a likely scenario where having your emojis sorted alphabetically is useful.

Thanks! Is there a date sort option?

I just ran a quick experiment which you can too. Date tags will sort past-to-present when sorted A-Z.

Hi, that is not the behavior I see. If I use the date tag, it changes the order, but don’t sort the list.

My date format is something like this: #2025 #03_Mar #d25 #Tue

It sorts perfectly with the newly added sorting feature if you put the date in the beginnings of the bullets.

Finally, thanks team! Now, if I share part of my workflowy, can someone else sort it? If they do, does it affect my view as well?

Ah, no, they can’t. 👍

Muy buena !!! A seguir así chicos. Sería ideal que permitiera ordenar por números (lo hace pero por ejemplo: 10100 lo ordena por sobre 150 si ordeno A-Z).

Nice feature, really! Would turn into pure dope if applicable to dates 🙂

Very nice. A couple things.
1) Numerals sort in ascending/descending order ahead/behind of the alpha sort, which could be useful for adding numbered priorities in a free list.
2) Other than the temporary Undo button or Ctrl+Z there appears to be no way to return to the original sorting. So, once you commit to a sort, you are stuck with it after you move on.

Awesome! I’ve been using a javascript bookmarklet for this up to now. It’s great to have this as native functionality!

Does it allow for more sorting options?

Very nice!

It would be very practical if date tags at the beginning of the node were also sorted chronologically in ascending or descending order.

Nice!
Does it only sort the bullets directly under the selected bullet or does i sort all sub-bullets also?

Of course I could have just tested it.
It does only sort the bullets directly under the selected bullet. Any further sub-bullets remain unaffected.
