workflowy updates april 22, 2022

Hey there folks, in this post we want to show you the mentions and updates features in action.

Up to now, we’ve only shown screenshots of these features and we recognize that it can be a little confusing to fully grasp how these features will actually work. In the short demo video below you’ll be able to see how we access both features and what they look like.

Hopefully, this will give you a better idea of how both mentions and updates work and how simple they are to use. We hope this also highlights how different the features are in comparison to how other team software handles both mentions and change highlighting. In our interpretation – mentions and changes are not a separate type of item but just another bullet that behaves how you would expect.

Note how we’re handling the mentions and updates views as types of inboxes instead of feeds as is done in some other apps. This was a conscious design choice that we feel makes it easier to keep track of everything – you control when the mentions and updates go away.

Another key difference is that since both of these views behave exactly like a regular Workflowy search, you can do everything you would expect right from either view. There is not a separate mentions view that you first check that then gives you limited reply options, the mentions view is the mention and you can reply with a single emoji or an entire document if you wish – all while keeping the context of the original mention intact.

In the next post, we’ll mention some of the other details that we didn’t show in the video, like mentioning someone and some quality-of-life things that we think you’ll be interested in.

Have any thoughts on how the features work? Sound off in the comments below!

See you in the next update 🇺🇦

Overdue notifications would be amazing. I’m constantly switching back and forth between my calendar and workflowy. It would be nice to mark something with a future date and get an alert when that date/time has come.

Hola !!! Muchas gracias por el update.

Se ve genial 👍

Ya estoy imaginando el cómo podré usar mi Workflowy con equipos y asesores externos, clientes y mi asistente (somos 2). Esto será un salto de calidad y productividad.

Hi, this is looking great.
Not fan of the congrats page, but no biggie.
Is there a way to see a node as it was before it was edited ? Maybe I won’t like an edit a colleague has made and would want to revert the node or just be able to compare with the previous text.
Regards

I like updates, but one feature I find often overlooked in similar apps is the ability to restore the update marks after they have been initially viewed.

Many apps will show you some type of marking to highlight updates since your last visit. But after your initial view of them, the marks disappear.

If you have to click a way to some other page, for whatever reason, the update markings are no longer visible. *That* is a huge PIA!

This really looks promising! I have a few questions I hope you’re allowed to answer already 😉

  1. Do I interpret this correctly: I see the number of mentions on the left that are made within this bullet (and everything below)? Or are these mentions from all over my Workflowy?
  2. Is it possible to turn on the mentions/update function just for a specific bullet (and everything below)?
  3. When I mark something as read: Will I still be able to see later on that Steve (or whoever) mentioned/added these bullets, to keep track on who did what?
  4. What happens if a bullet isn’t added but just edited?
  5. How do the colors of mentions and updates correspond with the text/highlight colors? (Ex. What happens if a text is added that is already green?)

Lots of questions, I know 😉 All my questions are for a specific use case: I work with TV producers and want them to give the opportunity to comment on the story beats I created in Workflowy. I don’t need them to see what changed – it really would just be for me to see their comments or edits. Do you think the new features will work for that?

Can’t wait!

Looks really good to me. I agree with Mike…I think the success page can be dispensed with unless there is some utility that I can’t think of…I would prefer just jumping back to work.

This is BRILLIANT. The way you pulled it off is super workflowy.

And the new updates blog posts make expectations much more manageable! Thank you!

This looks great—excited to put it to use.

My gut reaction is that I don’t like the confirmation/success page when marking items as read, as it feels like it’s disruptive and requires me to take an action to dismiss that I don’t want to have to take. Would it make more sense to simply drop you back to where you were automatically, and briefly show a success banner up top like in other interactions?

Also—is there a way to mark individual notifications/mentions as read, but leave others in unread state, or is that an all or nothing thing?
