Using WorkFlowy as a Kanban Calendar

By

August 21, 2014

Productivity Mashup has invented something called Kanban Calendar, which is a mashup of several of their favorite productivity systems. They’ve applied the concept of Kanban Calendar to WorkFlowy, and you should check it out. The video above is one of a few from the article showcasing the system, so check out the article for the full treatment.

I’m very fond of WorkFlowy, but there have not been any updates for a while which is a bit concerning. An active and honest feedback on what’s going on is a must to stay up in the competition with similar software like Moo.do and Evernote. There are a lot of potential in developing WorkFlowy further. Personally I’d like to see an option to change colour of the text and more fonts. Theme customisation could also make it a lot more unique and attractive to a lot of potential customers. If there is no time to develop it at the moment, because of the children or something else, you/the team should still at least once every month write something to show that you’re alive and thinking.

Inspired by this post, I have made up a calendar like a KANBAN CALENDAR in my WorkFlowy(for 2015/01~06). However, it comes with Chinese edition first. For Chinese WorkFlowy user, I have shared my calendar in the following link. Hope it will be useful for everyone.

安安各位,我自己做了一個行事曆(2015年上半年),在這裡分享給大家,有需要的人點下面的連接就可以複製了。
祝新年快樂。2015/02/16

Any updates? Can you share what’s on the roadmap and coming next? Did what we voted on make it into the next coming release? Inquiring minds want to know! 🙂

I have used your program for over a year now and love it. I want to pay for this service, just because I use it so much and like it. How can I move from the free version to a paid version. Your product is great! You should earn some revenue.

I’m not sure if I’m sold on Workflowy for Kanban or not, but man I am digging the use of the Header notes as an area for tag shortcuts! Thanks for the videos.

Hi John, the inspiration for the header tags/ arrangement came from Karl Rohde’s post, “How I use WorkFlowy to do my best work” on his blog, “Work Like an Artist”:
http://worklikeanartist.com/blog/workflowy
His has a more comprehensive system of tagging.

Just a thought: Every now and then there are suggestions on how to use Workflowy and examples of how to use it as a calendar or to-do list etc. How about offering a publicly shared view-only workflowy document of a template of the productivity method at hand so that people might give it a shot without having to recreate it from scratch? It would probably require people to then duplicate the template in their own accounts and delete the shared list, but it would remove a big barrier to entry when figuring out new productivity methods!

Keep up the good work!

Yeah, that’s a good idea. We’re definitely planning on doing something like this at some point.

Hi Anna,
Here’s the template from the post/ video that you can add to your WorkFlowy account. You should be able to duplicate it and tinker with it as you wish:

Can not find a place for a bug report. Let it put here.
If it’s not OK, take it to a proper place please.

PC Windows 7 app.
When dragging a line by a mouse all text becomes dizzy. Look at the screen print right side:

WEB app works OK.

Android app.
1. New line does not start with a capital letter.
2. One can not paste a new line in a blank line. There has to be smth before.

Would you change ellipsis at the and of a hidden comment to a right arrow for example? →

Hi Jesse

I have looked for an email address but could not find… There is a bug in workflowy that is seen when we use search function for words with Turkish characters… In my list for example when I search for “MÜZİK” to find the item named as MÜZİK I see nth… but when I search for müz, I see the item. and again after I add add an “i” to the search “müzi”, again the search result disappears…

the problem is I beleive somewhat related with treating i (I) and ı (İ) differently, as well as ü and u, and perphaps s and ş, c and ç, g and ğ… I mean turkish characters that are not found in the english language / keyboard. although in turkish they are different, they are also very similar and should be regarded as the same by search engines… google does this… and evernote adapted this in the recent years… feel free to get in touch with me if you have further questions: tolgaislam@gmail.com

Hi there, sorry for not having found a better place to post this, but I was wondering if there was a way of decreasing the minimum window width on the chrome app.

Clearly the theme allows for narrower view ports as on mobile and in a browser tab but as a ‘standalone’ chrome app, the window won’t resize any narrower than 640px! This is a bit sad because having a compact list on my screen alongside my work would be extremely handy.

(Using chrome 36 on linux)

Thanks frankman-how did you do the header without bullets?

Hi Scott,
You need to zoom in to the “header” by clicking on its node. You can do this with any node or list. When you zoom out again or go back to the original list you clicked on, it will have a bullet point again.

If you’re talking about the new template which includes a tag and context index, then those were created in a note under the main header.
