Product Update, August 8, 2023: dark mode sync with system, mirrors slash command, bullet creation date and author, and minor fixes and changes

By

August 8, 2023

Hey there Workflowy folks,

We’ve been radio silent for a while, so here’s an update of what we’ve been working on for the last few weeks. We’ll continue to share more product updates as they roll out so be sure to follow us on our social media accounts (Twitter, Reddit, Facebook) to stay in the loop.

Please let us know what you think about the changes, this update, or anything you think we should know.

Sync dark mode with your system

Choose the new “System” theme in settings to make WorkFlowy automatically switch between Light and Dark theme depending on your system settings. Known issues: not supported on Linux Chrome due to a Chrome issue; sometimes requires app restart on Android; System theme key-lines and iOS keyboard sometimes forget their theme. Please let us know if the sync breaks in other environments. (How to change theme)

Slash command for viewing bullet mirrors

Type “/” and use “View mirrors” slash command shows a dialog with all mirrors of the bullet. It acts the same as the “See them” button, available for mirrors at the top of the bullet menu. (More about mirrors)

Creation date and author of the bullet

Creation date is now shown too at the bottom of the bullet menu – previously only last change date was shown. Besides, if a bullet is in a shared tree, in addition to the date and time, the app now shows who created the bullet and who changed it last.

Other changes

  • Fix: Opening the sidebar on mobile devices doesn’t break dragging bullets anymore.
  • Fix: Line-breaks aren’t lost anymore when pasting text into a bullet note from WikiHow and websites with similar markup. Let us know when you have any problems pasting content into Workflowy, we’re gradually improving our algorithms.
  • Fix: “Show full-screen” works again on mobile and opens the image on full screen.
  • Change: “Delete” slash command is renamed to “Remove” for embedded projects. (You don’t actually delete the embedded bullet data, you just remove it from your account.)
  • Change: “Default” theme is renamed to “Light” in the settings.

And there you have it,  see you in the next update! 🇺🇦

Does the creation date show in iOS? The only thing I see is when it was autosynced.

Nice update. How about adding amd formatting a code block? (Or basic MD support)
It’s been a blocker many dev. teams for years

I don’t see dates. Neither creation date or last changed. I do see the Bullet Menu. But there are no dates at the bottom. Why is that? Maybe they are there only for paying subscribers?

Hi, thanks for the update. I have a question about mirrors. When I use (( it creates a mirror bullet FROM another bullet. Is there a shortcut to create a mirror TO.

I use workflowy for everything, agenda, calendar, notes, etc. So when I am taking notes in a meeting it would be great to just type a shortcut and mirror the bullet TO another list

This is the way I would prefer to use it, as well! Hope they have this one in the works.

Creation date and format-keeping line breaks are awesome. An extremely minimal API would be even more welcome 😬

Good that you’re working on the issue of pasting text into Workflowy.

But as for now, pasting from MS Word into Workflowy is still a mess…
Random line breaks are added in the middle of sentences… It doesn’t make sense.

As mentioned before, other outliners (like Legend) don’t have this issue pasting from the same source.

A workaround seems to be to paste into Wordpad first and then into Workflowy… But that is a needless extra step. 🤔

Hi Tim, thanks for the feedback. Do you have some example text that causes the random line breaks?

Glad to see creation date. Only took 5.5 years. Better late than never. 🙂Now if only we could get calendar reminders/notifications.

Nice additions, but the one update I would like to see more than all the others you’ve made in the past years is this: compatibility with other programs’ bullet formatting.

Please at least provide us with an export tool that doesn’t give us a bunch of black dots and weird formatting that forces us to erase one by one and then restructure to some semblance of a list, bulleted or otherwise. Exporting Workflowy notes is a mess.

I share bulleted lists directly with Workflowy with collaborators already and I constantly sing the virtures of Workflowy to the world, but Workflowy is not, and should not be, a word processing program. So when I do all my brainstorming and outlining in Workflowy, I’m stuck there. There’s no clean way to bring that into MS Word, or Google Docs, or even an email. Please please please fix this. Or if the solution exists already and I’ve been too daft to find it, please put me on the right track! Thank you.

Otherwise keep up the great work Workflowy team! I do love this product and use it daily.

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg, thanks for the feedback.

Re “compatibility with other programs’ bullet formatting.”

Does this image of a Workflowy list copied/pasted into Google Docs show the problem you described?

Hi Phil,

Hard to say. Does the program recognize those dots as bullets, or are they just characters? Will they move over if you press Tab or Shift Tab? Does deleting them remove the whole line as a normal billeted list would, or just the dot?

Generally, word processing programs use different bullet styles for each bullet level (i.e., parent, child). These appear to simply be character dots followed by a tab spacing.

Thanks for your response,
Greg

I think you’re mistaken. If you paste from Workflowy into MS Word you just have to “select all” and turn off “bullets” and you should have regular text.

Alternatively you can paste your text into Wordpad and that automatically deletes the bullets for you.

I just did a test with that. 🙂

Thanks Tim, though I *am* interested in maintaining the bulleted structure (it’s just that while they are exported with dots that appear to be bullets, there is no structure).

Excellent 🙂

Regarding the mirror, i’d like to see a shortcut to detach the mirror 😎

Keep doing the good work.
